The Birth of Rama

Told in English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese.

Come, sit close to me, my dear, and let me tell you a beautiful story. Long, long ago, in a golden city called Ayodhya, there lived a wise and kind king named Dashratha. He had grand palaces, loyal soldiers, and a whole kingdom that loved him — but one thing was missing that made his heart heavy: he had no children to hold, to teach, and to pass his kingdom on to one day. Can you imagine how lonely that must have felt, even surrounded by so many people?

So King Dashratha decided to do something very special. He performed a yagna — that means a sacred fire ceremony, where priests chant holy prayers around a glowing, crackling fire — and with all his heart, he asked the gods for a son. And do you know what happened, my dear? The gods heard him. Right out of that sacred fire rose a radiant being, holding a golden bowl of kheer, a sweet rice pudding blessed with divine power. Dashratha gently shared it with his three queens.

And guess what happened next? Not one, but four beautiful baby boys were born — Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna! Oh, the whole kingdom burst with joy. Temple bells rang out, ding, ding, ding, and soft flower petals drifted down from the sky like gentle rain. Do you know why everyone celebrated so much? Because little Rama was no ordinary baby — he was the seventh avatar, a special earthly form, of Lord Vishnu himself, sent down to help the world. And that, my darling, is how the story of the great Rama began.
