Birbal's Clever Answer

Told in English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese.

Come here, sweetheart, and let me tell you about the wisest riddle-solver in all the land. In the royal court of Emperor Akbar, there lived a very clever minister named Birbal, who was famous throughout the kingdom for his wisdom. One day, Akbar decided to test all his courtiers — that means the noblemen and ministers who served in his court. He drew a single line on the floor and announced a challenge: 'Make this line shorter — but you are not allowed to touch it.'

Can you imagine how puzzling that sounded? Everyone stood there completely stumped. Ministers scratched their heads, muttered to themselves, and thought as hard as they could, but nobody could figure out the answer. Then, quietly, Birbal stepped forward. Do you know what he did? He simply picked up the chalk and drew a second, longer line right next to the first one.

And instantly — just like that! — the first line looked shorter, simply because it was standing next to a bigger one, even though nobody had touched it at all! Akbar smiled with delight and praised Birbal in front of the whole court. Because you see, my dear, Birbal had taught everyone something wonderfully simple: sometimes, the cleverest solution isn't about changing the problem itself — it's about changing the way we look at it. Isn't that a wonderful thing to remember?
