The Ugly Duckling

Told in English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese.

Come sit with me, my love, and let me tell you a gentle story about someone who felt like he didn't belong — until he discovered who he truly was. Among a proud mother duck's clutch of fluffy, bright yellow ducklings, one little egg hatched into a rather odd-looking baby bird — bigger than his siblings, grayer, and altogether different. The other ducklings laughed at him and pushed him away, calling him ugly, and even the other farmyard animals looked down their noses at him.

Can you imagine how sad and lonely that must have felt, my dear? Heartbroken, the little bird wandered away from the farm all on his own. He drifted through cold, difficult seasons, hiding from hunters, shivering through a long and lonely winter, always wondering quietly to himself why he never seemed to belong anywhere at all.

But then, finally, spring arrived. And one day, he came upon a beautiful, shimmering lake, where elegant white swans glided so gracefully across the water. Expecting to be laughed at yet again, he lowered his head sadly and looked down at his own reflection in the still water — and gasped! Do you know what he saw looking back at him, my darling? Not an ugly duckling at all, but a graceful, fully grown young swan! The other swans welcomed him warmly into their family. And in that moment, he understood something beautiful: being different doesn't mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes, it simply means your time to bloom hasn't come quite yet.
